Copart Canada is pleased to offer the Voluntary Entry Program.

The Voluntary Entry Program is a Canada Customs program that allows for U.S. titled motor vehicles located in Canada to be imported before being registered in Canada through the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV). Please note this program does not include standard cross-border importation or trade of motor vehicles but rather U.S.-titled motor vehicles which became stranded in Canada.

What happens when you Bid and Win a vehicle in the Voluntary Entry Program:

  • Customs Clearance: Following your winning bid, and before you pay for your lot, the Customs process for the Voluntary Entry must be completed. Copart will complete this step on your behalf. This will be completed within two (2) business days.
  • We Register You: Once the Customs Clearance is complete, we register you with the RIV. Using the Power of Attorney document you completed on your buyer account, Copart will act on your behalf and register you as the purchaser with the RIV. Once registered, you will see the RIV fees and taxes appear on your buyer account, and you can now pay for your lot. Please note that you will be responsible for completing the import inspection required by the RIV within the required timeframe. Please visit the Registrar of Imported Vehicles website for further details on the RIV inspection requirements.
  •

Regardless of your country of origin, the vehicle in the Voluntary Entry Program must pass through the Canada Customs process to be legally sold in Canada.

    Registrar of Imported Vehicles Fees:

Fees for the RIV will be charged on all import lots, regardless of your country of origin or your intent to keep the vehicle in Canada. RIV fees are dependent on the type of vehicle you have bid on with sales tax varying by Province.

  • Salvage Vehicles: $325 + Tax.
  • Active Vehicles: $325 + Tax.
  • Parts – Only Vehicles: $100 + Tax.
  • Scrap: $0.
  •

These fees are subject to change by the RIV without notice, please visit Registrar of Imported Vehicles website for the current RIV structure for the province in which you are purchasing.

After the RIV, Registering in Your Jurisdiction:

Following successful inspection through the RIV process it is possible that other inspections will be required by your local jurisdiction prior to vehicle registration. Understanding the costs and requirements for vehicle registration in any jurisdiction is the responsibility of the buyer. Please contact your local transportation authorities for further information on the post-RIV registration process in your area.
