5 Tips for working on Project Cars
1. First determine your goals.
Why are you looking for a project car? Do you want to fix cars for fun or profit? Determining your goals will help you figure out what type of car to look for. Classic cars can be great project vehicles because they are unique and are fun to show off. Newer models might be a better choice if you are looking to sell the cars that you fix up.
2. Do your research.
If you're not a mechanic or a technician at a body or pro shop you will want to research ahead of time what would be required to fix up the vehicle you are looking to get. You can do this research by watching videos on YouTube, reading mechanic/ restoration blogs and talking to local mechanics or body shops who can offer advice and safety tips.
3. Search, inspect and purchase your project car.
Register with Copart (at no cost) and browse our inventory for potential project cars. Once you find the project cars you are looking for be sure to add them to your Watchlist and visit the yard to inspect the vehicles that you are serious about. Be sure that you have the licenses required prior to the auction starting. Then place your bids!
4. Plan for success.
Now that you have the car, you need a plan to complete your project. Start by setting realistic deadlines for each vehicle and each step. Start with the completion date and work backwards from there breaking your big project into multiple smaller ones.
5. Time to get started!
Now that you have a plan, don't wait to get started! Avoid procrastination, you can keep inspired by connecting with other car enthusiasts in your community. Whether meeting up at a car show or joining an online community, being surrounded by like-minded people will help inspire you to follow your project to completion.
Please keep in mind, provinces have different licensing requirements. In Canada, for vehicles located in any province, with the exception of Alberta, members will need a Master Business License to be able to bid. You can see a full list of our provincial licensing requirements to get more information on each province's requirements. Don't have the licenses required? Try using a Broker, they can help with the purchase. Currently we do not have any brokers located in Canada, however some US based companies are able to assist Canadian buyers, please reach out to the broker to make sure that they can help you. Please remembers that agreements with brokers are third-party agreements and are not regulated by Copart.
