Copart Canada Smart Buying

Learn How to Buy Vehicles from Copart Canada

What is Copart?

Copart is a 100% online vehicle auction with participation from members only. Most Canadian provinces require Copart Members to be a registered Business or Automotive Dealership to participate in bidding, buying, and selling activities. Alberta is the only Canadian province where members of the public may bid and buy vehicles.

Copart is NOT an automotive retailer. Copart is an auction company that often does not own the assets being sold. Rather, Copart creates a marketplace by which buyers and sellers may deal and exchange together by accepting consignment from a variety of sellers.

Copart conducts its auctions where every vehicle offered is available “as-is”. As a result, Copart and its sellers offer no warranty or guarantee of the vehicle's history, use, condition, or mechanical fitness.

Understanding Copart Fees

For an overview of Copart Member Fees. Please visit Copart.ca/Fees

Understanding Payments

Copart Members have 3 business days, including the date of purchase, to pay for their vehicle. If the Member does not pay for their unit within 3 business days, late fees will be charged.

Copart offers various payment methods. Please visit Copart.ca/Payments for more information.

Safeguarding your Copart Account

You are responsible for any purchases made on your Copart account. “I didn’t mean to bid” or “I didn’t place that bid” is not grounds for sale reversal.

Understanding Copart Rules and Terminology:

Common Copart Terms

Buy It Now

Certain vehicles are offered for sale with the “Buy It Now” feature. Buy It Now allows a Member to purchase a vehicle immediately at a price set by the seller before the vehicle goes to auction. Upon clicking the Buy It Now button, the Member will be directed to a confirmation page to confirm the Member’s Buy It Now bid. Once the bid is confirmed, the Member will be directed to the payment screen.

Make an Offer

Certain vehicles are offered for sale with the “Make an Offer” feature. Make an Offer allows a Member to make an offer for a vehicle. Offers submitted by clicking the Make an Offer button cannot be retracted and are valid for 2 business days (not including the day the offer is made) regardless of auction date or results.

Preliminary Bidding (Pre-Bid)

Preliminary bids (Pre-Bids) can be placed on any vehicle up to two minutes or two units away from being the vehicle on the block in the live auction. Pre-bids are also represented in the live auction and can be the winning bid if a higher bid is not submitted during the pre-bid phase or the live auction. When there is a tie between a pre-bid and live bid amount, the live bid will stand as the higher bid on the auction item.

Live Auction Bidding

Copart may offer vehicles for sale through a live auction format. All such vehicles are also offered for sale on Copart’s websites, with the live auction and Virtual Sale running concurrently. At the live auction, Copart will announce Virtual Bids placed on a vehicle and will enter Live Auction Bids placed by Members present in person at the live auction.

Run & Drive

At the time the vehicle arrived at Copart’s location, Copart verified that the vehicle (i) started, (ii) could be put into gear and (iii) was capable of moving forward under its own power. There is no guarantee, representation or warranty that the vehicle is in roadworthy condition or can be driven lawfully upon the highways of any province or state. There is no guarantee, representation or warranty that the vehicle will (i) start, (ii) drive or (iii) move forward under its own power at the time the vehicle is picked up at Copart’s location. It is the Member’s sole responsibility to ascertain, confirm, research, inspect and/or investigate the vehicle prior to bidding on it. Once the vehicle is removed from Copart’s premises, the Member accepts the vehicle “as is.”

Sales Status Terms

Sales Status refers to the current vehicle status. The meanings are as follows:

Pure Sale

There is no minimum bid or reserve placed by the seller. The vehicle will be awarded to the highest bidder at the end of the virtual auction.

On Approval

The seller has opted to have the ability to approve the final high bid amount that was achieved in the virtual auction. The Seller has until 6:00 p.m. PST of the business day following the auction to approve the bid amount. The highest bidder is held to their bid if the Seller approves their bid within the approval time frame.

Minimum Bid

The Seller has placed a reserve amount on the vehicle. If the minimum amount is not met during the live auction the Seller has until 6:00 p.m. PST of the business day following the auction to accept the bid.

Counter Bid

A bid that a Seller makes to counter the highest bidder’s offer. Counter bids are submitted after the auction for vehicles that have been designated by the Seller as Minimum to Bid or Bid to Be Approved. Members acknowledge and agree that regardless of whether a counter bid is made by the Seller, Members’ high bids on these vehicles shall remain open to acceptance by the Seller until 6 p.m. PST of the following business day (following the day of the auction).

Odometer descriptions reflect the odometer reading that is visible to the yard agent. Odometer readings/ types fall into four categories:

ACTUAL

The odometer reading is, to the best of our knowledge, a true and actual reading for this vehicle.

EXEMPT

The odometer reading is not legally required for this vehicle.

NOT ACTUAL

The odometer reading is not accurate or cannot be obtained for this vehicle.

EXCEEDS MECHANICAL LIMITS

The true mileage of the vehicle cannot be determined as the odometer has exceeded its capacity to measure it.

Have a thorough understanding of what you are bidding on

Copart members are welcome and encouraged to visit Copart locations to view a vehicles condition in person. Please visit that locations page for their vehicle preview hours.

Analyze the vehicle's lot details page – understand where the vehicle is located, review special notes, disclosures, and vehicle branding.

Inspect Before You Collect

Copart Members are encouraged to inspect their lots won before removing them from Copart property.

If you are not picking up your vehicle in person, please have the person picking up your vehicle inspect it.

If any issues arise with the vehicle, it is best to have them addressed with the yard management before removing the vehicle from Copart property.

Understand Licensing Requirements

Every province has its own set of licensing requirements. These requirements vary depending on the type of buyer and the type of vehicle (clean-titled or salvage). It is important to review the licensing requirements in the province you’re intending to bid in before attempting to bid on anything found on Copart.ca.

Understanding Vehicle Paperwork

Within the Canadian Province of Alberta, Copart sells on Bill of Sale.

Out of Province distinction required on vehicles last registered outside of Alberta (special noted) Some vehicles that are from outside of Alberta will require an “Out of Province Inspection” to be permitted back on the road.

To review Copart Rules and Regulations, please review Copart’s Member Terms and Conditions as well as Copart’s Member Pledge.

Common Misconceptions

Lot pick up times

Once a vehicle is paid in full, the Member is free to pick up or arrange pick up at both Copart locations and sub lot locations. Most vehicles will start accruing storage fees after 3 business days (including the day of auction). Copart Kiosk and Buy it Now vehicles will start accruing storage fees after 2 business days. If a vehicle exceeds $50 in storage fees, the vehicle will need to be cleared by Copart before it can be picked up.

To view a locations storage fees and load-out hours, please visit that locations page.

“I can drive my vehicle home from Copart”

This relies on the type of vehicle you purchase and if you have a license plate/insurance.

If you purchased a vehicle that is “un-fit” or “irreparable,” it will need to be towed out.

Salvage vehicles can be driven out with the proper transit pass. Transit passes are available at vehicle registry offices.

If you have questions on whether you can or cannot drive a vehicle off Copart property, please contact that Copart location.

Once a vehicle leaves the location, there is no recourse

It is the Member's responsibility to inspect the vehicle before leaving a Copart location. Once a vehicle leaves Copart, there will be no option to return it.

Before You Bid and Buy

Before you bid on and buy vehicles in Copart auctions, there are certain things a Member should consider.

Are you aware of the vehicles condition?

Members are encouraged to visit Copart locations to view vehicles. It is the Members responsibility to view a vehicle before placing a bid. Copart provides 10 high quality images and a general vehicle description for each vehicle. But by visiting a Copart location and inspecting a vehicle, Members can be sure that they are bidding on the vehicle that is right for them.

Please note vehicle branding is not an indication of a vehicle condition. Please view the vehicle in person to get the most accurate idea of the vehicles condition.

If you are unable to view a vehicle before auction, consider ordering a Vehicle Condition Report for $45. This report will provide more pictures and a few videos.

Did you check the branding?

Verify the branding regulations for that vehicle in your province.

Please consult provincial websites for more information.

Did you check the Special Notes/ Disclosures?

Special notes are sometimes placed on a vehicle. This could include, but is not limited to, history, located offsite, rental history and livery.

Odometer Actual vs Non-Actual

If Copart cannot confirm the mileage on a vehicle, it will be sold as Non-Actual.

Please visit the Copart Glossary for a descriptions of odometer readings.

Did you check the location of the vehicle? is it at a sublot?

The location of the vehicle can be found in the “Sale Information” section of the vehicle details page.

o The 10th vehicle image will show a map of the pickup location.

o Lot details special notes will indicate a sublot location.

Licensing Requirements

Every province has unique licensing requirements, depending on the type of buyer and the type of vehicle (clean-titled or salvage). Therefore, it’s essential to read up on these stipulations before attempting to bid on anything found on Copart.ca.

Copart Members don’t always require additional licenses beyond their government issued Photo-ID to bid on vehicles. In Alberta, dealers, dismantlers, general businesses, exporters and private individuals are able to bid on all vehicle types within that province. These vehicles are categorized as No License Required Vehicles.

Within Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and British Colombia, dealers, dismantlers, general businesses and exporters are able to bid on vehicles with the proper licensing. Private individuals will need to obtain the proper licensing or bid and buy through a third-party broker.

How do you get a business license? Business licenses can commonly be obtained through your provincial government and are issued when a business is registered with the government for tax purposes. Please check with your provincial government for a more detailed process.

Understanding Titles in Alberta

Understanding Titles in Alberta

Alberta is one of few jurisdictions where motor vehicles are not sold with titles, they are sold under a bill of sale. Additionally, motor vehicles do not need to be registered following a sale, as they can be sold without being registered at the DMV.

As a buyer it is your responsibility to know that a title will not automatically be provided with a vehicle sold in Alberta, but that one can be obtained from Ontario for a fee if you have an Ontario Registrant Identification Number (RIN). As a Buyer it is also important to understand your provincial regulations when purchasing motor vehicles from Alberta to avoid issues around registration or selling.

Alberta Motor Vehicle Branding

Alberta has motor vehicle branding that can be used to describe the status for potential registration or repair. This branding can be helpful when considering your bid and can be found at the top of the lot listing under "doc type". In this data field you can also check for the province the brand comes from, or the last province in which the vehicle was registered.

Active - The vehicle can be registered.

Salvage - Vehicles with this brand have typically been involved in an insurance claim and will need to be inspected and repaired prior to being registered. Under some circumstances, stolen vehicles fall under this category.

Rebuilt - Salvage vehicles move to rebuilt status following successful completion of a salvage inspection and can be registered.

Non-repairable - Vehicles with this brand cannot be registered. They are only sold as parts or for scrap. Under some circumstances, stolen vehicles fall under this category. Many jurisdictions will preserve a non-repairable branding from another jurisdiction. Check with your local DMV to understand the rules that apply in your area.

Please note: in certain cases flooded recreational vehicles (RVs) and holiday trailers will be given a status of non-repairable if there is evidence the water level surpassed the floor.

Vehicle Payment

Copart Canada offers various payment options for both domestic and international Buyers. Payment options include money order, etransfer, paying though online banking, debit card, credit card, cash up to $400.00, third-party financing and more.

Please note that debit and credit cards can only be used at the yard as no online payment methods are available in Canada for these payment types.

For more payment information, visit Copart.ca/Payments

To avoid late payment charges, please ensure you make payment within three business days, which includes the auction day.

Vehicle Pickup and Delivery

Once your vehicle is paid for, you can arrange to have it picked up at the yard. Following payment there is a complementary storage period of 3 days, following 3 days. After 3 days, you will be charged a fee each day prior to the pickup. You can check each location's page to see their storage fees.

When picking up your vehicle, there are a few things to remember:

You must schedule your pick-up during business hours.

Heavy and medium duty lots are self-load only.

While it is possible to drive your vehicle out from a Copart yard, it is the buyer’s responsibility to ensure they have the required registration, insurance, or salvage in-transit paperwork. It is not permissible to move vehicles onto the street from a Copart yard without first satisfying all regulatory requirements, nor is it permissible to tow out a vehicle with a rope, chain, or similar device. If you prefer, we can arrange to have your vehicle delivered to you. Please call your local Copart location for more information as not all locations are currently available for delivery.
